Customs seize £1m worth of cannabis at Plymouth

Cannabis with a street value of around £1 million has been seized by Customs officers at Plymouth Ferryport.

A Customs mobile team seized approximately 360 kilos of cannabis after discovering the drugs in a lorry that arrived at the port early on Friday morning.

The lorry was stopped after it arrived on a ferry from Santander, northern Spain. During a search of the vehicle, officers found the drugs packed in 18 holdalls concealed under old shower trays being carried as the load.

The 37-year-old driver of the lorry and a 35-year-old passenger, both from south east London, were arrested and questioned by Customs. They were later released on bail pending further enquiries.

Customs South West spokesman, Bob Gaiger, said that the discovery was an "excellent detection".

"It clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of our flexible and mobile way of working. Plymouth Ferryport should not be seen as a soft touch by smugglers," he said.

"In line with the government's drugs strategy, Customs main priority relating to drugs is to reduce the availability of Class A drugs. But we continue to uphold the law relating to other illegal drugs, including cannabis."

This is the second large seizure by Customs at Plymouth Ferryport in less than three weeks. On June 29, 3.8 million cigarettes were seized from a lorry that had just arrived from Spain.
