Second British child dies after Cretan road tragedy

A second British child has died in a Cretan hospital following yesterday's road tragedy close to the resort of Malia.

The crash happened at midnight (2am GMT) when the coach, which was carrying 30 British tourists, was hit by a truck and car close to the resort town.

Paul Amar, 10, died shortly after the crash. Eight-year-old Nikhil Ponja died last night after slipping into a coma. He had suffered injuries to his head, lung, abdomen and chest. His sister, Ronika, 12, suffered a broken leg in the smash, which also injured two other children and an adult.

The BBC has reported that the coach was hit by the truck, and a car then careered into the vehicles before ploughing into a group of tourists who were getting off the coach.

The driver of the car and the driver of the truck have been charged with grave negligence leading to manslaughter and grievous bodily harm. Police are looking for a third driver.
