Twin Russian air tragedies linked to terrorist group

One of two aircraft which crashed on Monday evening was downed as a result of terrorism, Russian security officials have said.

Eight-nine passengers and crew lost their lives when two airliners crashed within minutes of each other after taking off from Moscow's Domodedovo airport. The two aircraft departed within 40 minutes of each other.

The BBC has reported that a group called the Islamic Brigades has claimed responsibility for the crashes - an attack which they carried out in solidarity with Islamic resistance fighters in Chechnya. The group said that it had five men aboard each flight.

Investigators from the FSB, formerly the KGB, have said today that small traces of what they to believe be explosives has been found amid the wreckage of one of the aircraft.

The crash site of the Volvograd-bound TU-134, which took off at 9.35pm local time (5.35pm GMT), was discovered near the village of Buchalki in the Tula region. Forty-three people died in the crash which occurred shortly before 11pm local time (7pm GMT).

The Sochi-bound TU-154, which departed at 10.15pm local time, came down near Rostov-on-Don a few minutes prior to the Volvograd flight. Forty-six passengers and crew died in the disaster.

The FSB are continuing their examination of data in the aircraft's black box flight recorders.

The British Prime Minister has written to the Russian government offering his condolences to the families of those bereaved by the disasters.

Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has also voiced his "shock" at the twin tragedies.
