UK offers support to Russia in school hostage crisis
The Foreign Secretary has expressed his solidarity with Russia after a terrorist gang entered a school in North Ossetia and held hostage 150 people – most of them children.
Several people have been killed since the school in Beslan was taken over by 17 armed men and women this morning. Reuters has reported that eight civilians have been killed by the terrorist group.
According to PA news, each member of the group is wearing explosive bomb packs and have threatened to destroy the school if security forces attempt to storm the building. It is understood that the terrorists have demanded the withdrawal of Russian troops from Chechnya.
Jack Straw contacted Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov earlier today to express his "shock" at the news.
"The Prime Minister has written today to President Putin on behalf of the British government and people to convey our condolences and our solidarity at this time," he said.
"Our prayers for a peaceful resolution are with you and the Russian people."
The Secretary of State also expressed sincere condolences to the families of the victims of yesterday's bomb attack outside a Moscow metro station in which 10 people died.

Brown's Stance Praised By Litvinenko Widow
The widow of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko has commended Prime Minister Gordon Brown for "standing firm" on his demand for the extradition of the main suspect in the assassination of the defector. Marina Litvinenko welcomed Mr Brown's continued "firm" calls for the extradition of Andrei Lugovoi, two years after Mr Litvinenko's poisoning.

£1bn is being unlocked to fund the Department of Education's free school meals commitment. The news, announced by deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, follows an announcement in September that every child in reception, year 1 and year 2 in state-funded schools will receive a free school lunch.
