The attacker fled into a housing estate near to Orchid Close following the scuffle – leaving Mr Sharpe on the ground, mortally wounded with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He later died at Sandwell District General Hospital.

Neral Sharpe had only arrived back in Britain off the Calais-Dover ferry at around 12.45am. Police believe Mr Sharpe drove to the car park of the shopping centre on Oldbury Road and parked his silver Peugeot car near to Kwik Save supermarket. He was killed a short time later.

A post mortem is taking place this afternoon to ascertain a cause of death. At this stage there is no known motive for the incident.
