Services must improve for UK's ageing population, says report

Services must continue to improve and expand to meet the needs of an increasingly aging population, according to a report published today.

The report, 'Better Health in Old Age', written by Professor Ian Philp, National Director for Older People's Health, found that in an ageing society older people should greater control over their services as well as taking more responsibility for looking after their own health.

In a largely positive report, Prof Philp also found that older people were healthier and living longer, they were more likely to stop smoking and to take advantage of health screening and immunisation.

Speaking at the report's launch in Wandsworth, Prime Minister Tony Blair said: "This is an encouraging report which shows that improved services are helping older people recover from falls and strokes more quickly.

"People are no longer stuck in hospital for weeks after an operation and this means that their quality of life is being improved."

The Prime Minister was joined by Health Secretary John Reid as they attended a 'Keep On Moving' class for older people.

Mr Reid said: "This progress report demonstrates older people recognise its never too late to look after your health."
