UN launches emergency appeal for occupied territories
The UN has launched an emergency appeal today to help tackle the "worst levels of destruction" so far in the four-year Palestinian uprising against Israel.
The UN has called for $185.8 million to allow it to carry out "crucial relief operations" for 1.6 million people in the occupied West Bank and Gaza.
The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) claimed that Israel had employed "drastic measures" this year against Palestinian militants firing rockets from Gaza and other security threats. The accelerating levels of demolitions, increasing deaths and injuries, and strict movement restrictions had contributed to ever-growing hardship for the refugee population. More than 2.2 million people were now surviving on less than $2 per person per day, the UN said.
“The statistics of death, destruction and poverty in this appeal do little to convey the real suffering of the population of the occupied territory,” Peter Hansen, Commissioner-General of UNRWA.
“Whole neighbourhoods in Jabalia and Rafah camps (in Gaza) have been flattened. Our schools are seeing an entire generation grow up in an environment of terrifying violence. The curse of endemic poverty now touches two thirds of the population.”

Arafat's coffin arrives in Ramallah
The body of the Yasser Arafat has arrived in Ramallah – the compound where he spent two years blockaded in by the Israeli army. The Palestinian leader, whom Tony Blair described as having "symbolised the Palestinian national movement", is expected to be buried in a stone coffin inside his ruined compound before sunset.

'Outrage' as Gaza bombing kills three US officials
The US Secretary of State has expressed his "outrage" following yesterday's attack on a diplomatic convoy in Gaza in which three US officials died. The men – reported to be a diplomat and two security guards – were killed, and another was injured, when a concealed bomb or landmine was detonated.

Arafat passes away in French hospital
The Palestinian President Yasser Arafat has died at a French military hospital in the early hours of this morning. The 75-year-old Palestinian leader is understood to have died from a brain haemorrhage after slipping into a coma on November 3.

Straw calls for Israeli restraint to end 'unnecessary suffering'
The British foreign secretary has called for restraint from the Israelis after causing "unnecessary suffering" during recent military incursions into the Gaza Strip. Jack Straw was speaking after a bloody weekend of violence in the region which claimed the lives of at least 70 people.
