Wintry weather to continue into next week

Britain faced another day of bad weather as heavy snow and icy conditions continue to affect many areas across the country.

Although forecasters have said that the worst of the weather is over, freezing temperatures are still expected in parts of the UK tonight. Some forecasters have predicted that the cold weather may last into next week.

The Borders and Northumberland were the worst affected areas today, although central and eastern areas of England also faced more heavy showers. Heavy snow also fell in southern Scotland and the Thames estuary. Some major roads are closed because of the weather, including the A686 in Cumbria, A689 in West Yorkshire, A66 in Durham and A640 in Huddersfield.

However, the RAC reported that road conditions had generally improved today (Friday), following intensive gritting. Although drivers were warned to take care and check weather forecasts, as ice, slush and more snow could cause further problems on the roads.

A number of schools remained closed in Kent, Yorkshire, Cheshire, Derbyshire, Norfolk, Surrey and Lancashire.

Areas of high pressure in Scandinavia and northern Europe and regions of low pressure to the west of the UK have caused a drop in temperatures as cold air is drawn across the UK.
