Search extended in baby bodies’ case

Police have confirmed that they have been granted more time to question the woman at the centre of an investigation into the discovery of the remains of three dead babies.

Anne Mahoney (64), from Forsythia Close on the Gurnos estate in Merthyr Tydfil was arrested after police found the body of a baby in her former home.

The body, which was discovered on March 20, was found in a suitcase in the attic of a house in Penyfan View on the same estate, where Mrs Mahoney had previously lived.

Following Mrs Mahoney’s arrest, the remains of what are believed to be the bodies of another two babies were found in the attic of her current home. A Home Office post mortem will be carried out on the remains. A search is also continuing at the house.

Police have been granted a further 36 hours to question Mrs Mahoney, who is reportedly a former nurse and a local school governor. She is also well known in the local community for her volunteer work.

A third property on the Gurnos estate is also to be searched as part of the ongoing investigation, police have revealed. The house is also a former residence of Mrs Mahoney’s.

Police have asked anyone with any information on the case to contact the incident room on: 01685 724270 or the Crimestoppers confidential line on: 0800 555 111.
