Woman in ‘babies in attic’ find bailed

A 64-year-old former nurse was granted bail in court today over charges in connection with concealing the birth of a baby, after a body was discovered in the attic of a home in Wales.

Ann Mahoney, from the Gurnos estate in Merthyr Tydfil, was arrested earlier this week, in connection with the discovery. The body had been discovered by the new owners in a suitcase in the attic of a house in the estate on March 20.

Mrs Mahoney, who is well known in the local area for her volunteer work, was charged with concealing the birth of a child, which she delivered. The offence is alleged to have taken place some time between January 1, 1951 and March 20, 2005.

Mrs Mahoney was granted bail today at Merthyr Tydfil magistrates court on the condition that she stays in a bail hostel, makes daily reports to a police station and only re-enters Wales in order to attend court appearances.

Police are still continuing a search of a home at the Gurnos estate and investigating the remains of two other infants that were found in the attic of another home on the estate.

Mrs Mahoney is due to appear in court again on May 19.
