Kylie Minogue diagnosed with breast cancer

Pop singer Kylie Minogue has announced that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

The Australian star, who turns 37 later this month, was diagnosed as having the disease earlier this week while visiting family in her home city of Melbourne.

Her tour management company said that the cancer was in the early stage and that Ms Minogue will begin treatment immediately.

The diagnosis has forced the singer to cancel a tour of Australia, which was due to begin in Sydney on Thursday. The ‘Showgirl’ tour, which has already successfully travelled throughout Britain and Europe, was due to go to Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth over the next month. She has also been forced to pull out of her headline slot at this year’s Glastonbury festival on June 26.

In a statement on her website, Kylie said: “I was so looking forward to bringing the Showgirl tour to Australian audiences and am sorry to have to disappoint my fans. Nevertheless, hopefully all will work out fine and I’ll be back with you again.”

Kylie Minogue shot to fame in the hit Australian sitcom ‘Neighbours’ in the 1980s. She launched her hugely successful pop career in the late Eighties and was taken under the wing of leading pop producer, Pete Waterman, who produced a series of huge hits for her, including ‘I Should Be So Lucky’, ‘Hand On Your Heart’ and the duet ‘Especially For You’, with her former boyfriend and ‘Neighbours’ co-star Jason Donovan.

An attempt to move away from her pop image towards a more rock and indie style of music proved less successful, but the 2000 re-launch of her pop career, with the massive hit single, ‘Spinning Around’, re-established Kylie as a major pop star once again.

Kylie has also helped to raise money for breast cancer causes – three years ago, one of the star’s bras was sold at an auction for Breast Cancer Care, raising £2,400.

Commenting on today’s announcement, Sangeeta Haindl, Director of Communications at Breast Cancer Campaign, said: “This is sad news about Kylie, a pop star that many of us have grown up with over the years, who has now been diagnosed with breast cancer. However, it is important to remember that this is not primarily a young woman’s disease and there are still 40,470 women diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK each year. This is why it’s important that women are breast aware and know the risks associated with the disease.”

The risk of developing breast cancer is small in younger women but increases with age. Around one in nine women in the UK will develop the disease at some point during their lifetime. Further information about breast cancer is available from: www.breastcancercampaign.org
