Colgate announces loss of 400 UK jobs
Toothpaste manufacturer Colgate has announced plans to close its Manchester factory with the loss of 400 jobs.
Colgate, which is based in New York, announced that the plant in Salford, Greater Manchester, would be shut down by the end of 2007. However, the firm’s other UK factory in Guildford, Surrey, is not expected to be affected.
The closure of the Manchester plant is part of a programme to help source products in the most “efficient and effective way”. Factories in Italy, Poland, Romania and Turkey are also expected to be affected by the cuts.
In a statement, Colgate said that the announcement was not a reflection on the factory’s performance or the employees. Colgate also pledged to provide assistance for all employees affected by the cuts and said that the company would be consulting unions and the European Works Council regarding the plans for the closure of the plant.
Paul Reuter, an official for the trade union Amicus, described the news as “extremely disappointing” and said that they would be seeking immediate talks with Colgate.
