Heathrow expansion plans announced

A third runway could be introduced at Heathrow airport under new proposals published today.

The plans aim to transform the airport to accommodate increasing passenger growth. £4.2 billion has already been allocated for the building of Terminal 5, which is due to open in 2008, but BAA Heathrow has now announced plans to invest a further £3 billion over the next ten years in order to rejuvenate and develop the rest of the airport, which could include a potential third runway.

BAA Heathrow said that any potential development for a third runway was still “years away”. However, the company said that any development could affect up to 700 houses and said it would shortly be publishing property blight schemes to assist anyone whose home might be affected by the plans.

However, local pressure group Hacan warned that a third runway would lead to increased noise and pollution in the area. Hacan chairman John Stewart told the BBC “No-one’s going to want to buy a home here if they think the third runway’s coming”.

Commenting on the plans, Mick Temple, Managing Director, BAA Heathrow said: “The aviation industry is constantly changing to reflect the evolving needs of air passengers and as an airport operator we also have to respond to meet these needs. What is certain is that Heathrow cannot afford to stand still. We need to plan for the future and ensure we provide excellent customer service and facilities to both our passengers and airlines.

“We are proud of the fact that Heathrow offers enormous benefits to the local and national economies, but are also keenly aware that our operations have a significant impact on our surrounding communities. The challenge for us is to secure the continued growth and benefits of Heathrow in a way which is both socially and environmentally responsible.”

Plans to modernise Heathrow are already underway. A £22 million extension to Terminal 1’s International Departure Lounge opened in May and other major projects include the £100 million redevelopment of Terminal 3’s Pier 6 to accommodate the A380.

The consultation period continues until the end of October 2005 and an updated interim master plan is likely to be published during 2006.
