Government plans improved home oxygen services
Plans to improve home oxygen services for patients suffering from breathing difficulties have been unveiled by Health Minister Jane Kennedy.
Four companies – Air Products, Allied Oxycare/Medigas, BOC and Linde – to provide a modernised service across England by the end of the year.
Oxygen therapy services are vital for patients who suffer breathing difficulties as a result of long-term medical conditions such as lung disease, heart disease and cystic fibrosis, enabling them to live at home, rather than in hospital. It can also help support the discharge of premature babies, enabling them to be at home with their parents as soon as possible. Around 60,000 patients currently receive home oxygen therapy in England.
The new improvements to the service will include the latest equipment, including lighter weight cylinders, smaller, more efficient concentrators, liquid oxygen and portable systems that support greater mobility and independence. Patients will also be provided with round-the-clock access to expert advice and support.
Changes will also be made to the process of ordering home oxygen, to enable GPs and hospital doctors to order the required service.
Ms Kennedy said: “The new services will ensure that patients have access to the latest equipment that meets their individual needs and helps to improve their quality of life. Patients want to be at home and we want them to have the confidence and support to manage their symptoms at home. I know that patients and the NHS want to see change and I want to see this happen as soon as possible.”
The British Thoracic Society has also welcomed the introduction of the new services. Professor Wisia Wedzicha said: “The introduction of the new home oxygen service is the most exciting development in the management of patients with chronic respiratory disability and respiratory failure for the past 20 years. This service has been much awaited by patients, physicians and nurses.”
