Best released on police bail

Former Manchester United and Northern Ireland football star George Best has been released on police bail following questioning over an alleged assault.

Mr Best, who apparently walked voluntarily into Staines police station in Surrey, denies striking 34-year-old Vicky Pope who is an acquaintance of his former lover Gina Devivo.

Ms Pope has claimed that Mr Best struck her on the neck as she tried to stop him from entering Ms Devivo's house in Ewell in Surrey on June 7.

Police at Staines detained Mr Best, 59, for over nine hours and it is understood that as a condition of his bail he is to attend a police station in Surrey for possible further questioning on July 6.

His agent has said that Mr Best denies the allegations and is protesting his innocence. He explained that the reason Mr Best had been held so long was that a doctor had been called to examine him before police proceeded with questioning.

Mr Best, who had a liver transplant in 2002, has a history of alcohol abuse.

Last week, police cautioned Best's then lover, Ros Hollidge, over an alleged assault on him.
