Random hygiene checks for hospitals

Hospitals are to face random spot checks from independent investigators to ensure that hygiene standards are being met, it has been announced.

Inspectors from the Healthcare Commission will investigate hygiene standards at 100 hospitals this summer, in a bid to crack down on the spread of hospital-based infections, such as the MRSA superbug.

The inspectors are expected to visit mainly those NHS Trusts which are known to have poor levels of hygiene, although inspections will also take place at other hospitals as well.

The inspectors will have a 55-point checklist and will be checking a number of areas including operating theatres, wards and outpatient areas, as well as the condition of floors, sinks and toilets.

The results will be given to the hospitals within days of the inspections taking place and they will be asked to make any necessary improvements.

The government has pledged to reduce the infection rate of MRSA by 2008. The superbug kills around 1,000 per year in the UK.

Healthcare Commission chief executive Anna Walker said that there was a “real danger” that poor hospital hygiene could damage patients’ confidence in healthcare. However, she said that there was still a shortage of information about hygiene standards.
