Protestors march to Gleneagles
Protestors participating in the march to the G8 summit have broken away from the agreed route, it has been reported.
Some demonstrators managed to walk through a field and approach the steel security fence surrounding the five-star Gleneagles hotel, where G8 leaders, including Tony Blair and US President George W. Bush, are meeting.
However, the march is reported to have been peaceful and good-natured.
Tayside Police had banned the march to Gleneagles over fears that violence could break out. However, they agreed to reverse the decision and let the march, through Auchterarder to the Gleneagles hotel, go ahead, following negotiations with organisers G8 Alternatives.
A spokesperson for the Stop the War Coalition said it would have been “an incredibly damaging blow to civil liberties” if the march had not gone ahead and accused the police of creating “a very dangerous situation”.
There had been clashes between police and protestors in Stirling this morning. Police were reportedly attacked with bricks and bottles and local businesses were also targeted – the windows were smashed in one Burger King restaurant. Around 60 people were reported to have been arrested.
The trouble followed violent disturbances in Edinburgh on Monday, where around 100 protestors were arrested following clashes with police after an event organised by anti-capitalist groups.

Police numbers reach record levels
Police numbers in England and Wales have reached record high levels of more than 141,000, the Home Office has reported. The number of police officers has increased by more than 2,000 since March 2004 to 141,230.

Met surpasses recruitment targets
The drive to put more police officers on the streets of London led to the Met recruiting well above its target for the last financial year. Both recruitment and workforce strength targets for 2002/03 have been exceeded with 3,489 new officers joining against a recruitment target of 3,413.

Renewed Appeal For Information On 1999 Disappearance
Police have renewed an appeal for information on the disappearance of Bruce Gapper almost 16 years ago. Mr Gapper, from Dewsbury, was reported missing on 16 March, 1999. He was 40-years-old at the time of his disappearance. Police said they believe Mr Gapper was murdered.

Sex Offender Prison Sentences At 10-Year High
A new report released today has revealed the prison sentences given to sex offenders has reached a 10-year high. The Criminal Justice System Statistics Quarterly shows that sex offenders are now sentenced on average to more than five years in prison – an increase of 4.5 months in the past year alone.

New data has revealed there was a surge in online shopping in the run up to the Christmas period. The survey, published by the British Retail Consortium (BRC), said that an increasing use of tablets and smartphones, as well as fast delivery times added to the sharp rise in online shopping before Christmas.
