Man released in Milly Dowler murder case
A 57-year-old man, arrested in connection with the murder of Surrey schoolgirl Amanda ‘Milly’ Dowler, has been released without charge.
The man, who is from the Greater London area, was arrested in connection with the abduction and murder of the 13-year-old, on Tuesday morning. He was questioned at a police station in Surrey, but was released on Tuesday evening.
Milly disappeared as she was returning home from school in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, on March 21, 2002.
Her body was discovered six months later, in Yateley Heath Woods, near Fleet in Hampshire, by a couple who were picking mushrooms in the woods.
Milly’s family made a fresh appeal for information on the third anniversary of her disappearance in March this year. They established a charity, Milly’s Fund, after her disappearance, in order to increase awareness of personal safety among children and young people.
Milly’s disappearance sparked the biggest manhunt in the history of the Surrey police force. Since 2002, 2,885 people have been questioned, 4,288 statements have been taken and 127 searches have been carried out.
Although there have been previous arrests during the investigation, no charges have yet been brought.
