Lottery scratch cards raise £2m for Olympics
A recently launched special edition National Lottery scratch card has helped to raise almost £2 million towards funding the 2012 Olympic Games in London, it has been announced.
Lottery operators Camelot said the ‘Go For Gold’ scratch card was recording sales of over £1 million weekly.
Camelot revealed that the scratch card, which offers cash prizes of up to £2,012, has sold faster than any other card since they were introduced in November 2002.
The announcement came as Camelot prepared to launch another 20 million Go for Gold cards to follow the original 11 million first-edition cards that were printed.
The National Lottery is expected to contribute £1.5 billion towards the costs of the 2012 Olympics and Camelot hope to raise £750 million from a series of dedicated lottery games to contribute towards the final amount.
Dianne Thompson, Chief Executive of Camelot, said they were “delighted” by the response. She said: “Although we had anticipated the scratch cards would prove popular, to find ourselves in the very welcome position of having to produce a second edition ‘Go For Gold’ scratch card, especially so soon after the launch of the first, is fantastic.
“The popularity of ‘Go For Gold’ clearly demonstrates that there is a real appetite amongst National Lottery players to support the London 2012 Games.”
The National Lottery Commission and the International Olympic Committee are also looking at the possible introduction of other games, including new scratch cards and special sports-themed games.
