Internet grows at fastest ever pace

Internet services company Netcraft has recently reported a surge in the number of sites online that has seen the internet grow at the fastest pace since the dot.com boom in the late 1990s.

The Netcraft survey found an increase of 2.68 million sites since the last survey in September, making 2005 the strongest year for internet growth, one that has seen 17.5 million sites added, more than the 16 million added in 2000.

While the number of hostnames reached almost 75 million in October, the number of "active sites" is estimated at around 60% of this figure, around 34 million sites, as many companies register websites speculatively, or use sites as marketing and associated links. This estimate of the number of live sites is further complicated as an internet domain name can serve as a gateway to hundreds, perhaps thousands of other independently active sub-sites.

Netcraft apportions a considerable part of the recent rise to a greater number of small companies placing themselves online - a trend that was evident before the 2000 boom in internet growth.

This year has also seen a radical change in the type of internet connectivity.

According to the UK's Office Of National Statistics in May 2005 broadband connections overtook dial-up as the predominant means of connection.

Until April 2005, the majority of users connected to the internet via a dial-up connection, however, this has been in decline since it peaked in February 2002.

The market share of broadband connections, which offer at least a ten-times faster connection, has been increasing since the index began.
