Burberry reports slight sales increase

Luxury fashion brand Burberry has reported a 3% rise in underlying sales.

The luxury retailer, famous for its distinctive checked design, said that it was on schedule to increase average retail selling space by 9% for the financial year.

The news comes one day after Burberry announced the appointment of a new Chief Executive.

Angela Ahrendts will join Burberry on January 9 as an executive director, before assuming the role of Chief Executive on July 1.

Current Chief Executive, Rose Marie Bravo, will become Vice Chairman of the luxury fashion brand.

Ms Ahrendts joins Burberry from US clothing company Liz Claibourne, where she currently holds the post of Executive Vice President. Prior to joining Liz Claibourne, she held posts as Executive Vice President of Henri Bendel and President of Donna Karan International.

Ms Bravo, who joined Burberry in 1997, has been credited with turning around the firm’s fortunes, transforming it from a struggling British label into a major fashion brand.

Burberry, which has its corporate headquarters in Haymarket, will celebrate its 150th anniversary next year.
