The Ministry of Defence has named the British soldier killed by a roadside bomb in Iraq on Tuesday night.

Sergeant Christian Hickey, of the 1st Battalion the Coldstream Guards, died as a result of his injuries, following the explosion, which took place around 11:23 local time in Basra on Tuesday night.

The 30-year-old married soldier, from Bradford, West Yorkshire, had been on a routine patrol in the Southern Iraq city when the blast occurred.

Defence Secretary John Reid said: “The death of this British soldier in Iraq last night deeply saddens me. All out thoughts and sympathies are with the family at this very difficult time.”

Sgt Hickey’s death brings the total number of British troops to have died in Iraq to 97 – 64 of whom died as a result of hostile action – since March 2003.
