Two deaths follow Birmingham riot

An 18-year-old man has been shot dead near to the location of a riot in Birmingham at the weekend.

Police have arrested two men in connection with the shooting incident in Newtown, though it has not been confirmed if there is any link with the earlier violence.

The rioting, which broke out in the Lozells area in the south of the city on Saturday between black and Asian groups, was reported to have been set off by allegations that a young girl had been raped. However, police said that while forensic experts had been in the location, a sexual assault had not been formerly reported to police and condemned this as a "rumour".

On Saturday night, during disturbances on Lozells Road, 23-year-old Isiah Young-Sam who was stabbed, later died in hospital and 35 people were also treated for injuries. Police are studying CCTV footage taken in the area and have appealed for anyone with information or who captured images on mobile phones in the area to contact detectives.

Detective Superintendent David Mirfield said: “We need to ask the people of Birmingham to rally together as well as they have in the past and to come forward with information.”

West Midalands police confirmed that an earlier demonstration held by community groups had passed off peacefully. However, at a meeting held in a local church, a number of people who had tried to force their way in to the meeting had been prevented from doing so. A series of "minor disorders" were then reported to have occurred in the area. This apparently culminated in a fatal stabbing and the wounding of another person in the same incident. It is not known exactly where these occurred.

Further disturbances broke out on Sunday evening but police, who had maintained a heavy presence in the area, said that last night's heavy rain helped disperse the crowds in the area.

Police said that five arrests had been made in connection with the disturbances.

As armed officers had been in the area close to where Sunday's shooting had occurred, the Independent Police Complaints Commission has been advised of the shooting, as is routine in such incidents.
