Queen’s birthday events unveiled

Buckingham Palace has revealed details of celebrations to mark the Queen’s 80th birthday next year.

A number of events, combining private and public celebrations, are planned to take place at both Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle to mark the Queen’s actual birthday on April 21 and her official birthday on June 17.

The Queen will spend her actual birthday at Windsor Castle, where the Prince of Wales will host a family dinner. However, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will host a reception and lunch at Buckingham Palace for other people who share her actual birthday, on April 19.

Members of the Royal Family will also attend a special service of Thanksgiving to mark the Queen’s actual birthday at St George’s Chapel, Windsor on April 23.

The Trooping the Colour will mark the Queen’s official birthday. She will also attend a National Service of Thanksgiving at St Paul’s Cathedral with the Duke of Edinburgh on June 15 and host a “birthday” Garden Party for children from all over the UK on June 25.

As part of the programme of celebrations, a special travelling selection of ten of the Royal Collection’s finest drawings by Leonardo da Vinci will travel to museums and galleries in Exeter, Aberdeen, Leeds and Cardiff throughout 2006.

The Duke of Edinburgh will celebrate his 85th birthday on June 10 next year.
