London pays tribute to July 7 victims

The Queen and Prime Minister Tony Blair have attended a national memorial service for those killed in the July 7 bomb attacks.

A congregation of 2,300 people – including families of the victims, survivors and members of the emergency services present that day – gathered in St Paul’s Cathedral to pay tribute to those who died in the suicide bomb attacks.

During his sermon, the Archbishop of Canterbury Dr Rowan Williams, described those who had “so pointlessly and terribly died” as “precious” and “non-replaceable”.

The Christian service was designed to recognise London’s multi-cultural diversity.

During the service, four candles, representing the sites of the four explosions – Aldgate, Edgware Road and King’s Cross Tube stations and Tavistock Square – were lit. Prayers were also said for the emergency services.

More than half of those who attended the service had lost a relative or friend or been injured in the blasts. It is understood that apart from one person, all the victims were represented at the service – the Department of Culture did not say whose family was not attending.

The Queen met with some of the bereaved families after the service.
