England considers potential World Cup bid

Chancellor Gordon Brown has announced that he would support a bid by England to host the World Cup in 2018.

Mr Brown said that hosting the World Cup after the Olympics in London in 2012 would be a “magnificent double” for the country.

Speaking on GMTV, the Chancellor said that Germany – who will host the 2006 tournament – had staged the event in 1974. He said: “It’s about time it came back to us.”

England has hosted the World Cup once, in 1966, when they also won the tournament.

Mr Brown announced that the government would investigate the costs and benefits of hosting the World Cup before a decision to stage a bid would be made.

The study, which will be carried out by the Treasury and the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, will report its findings next year.

However, the decision to launch an official bid will be made by the Football Association (FA).

The FA had applied to host the 2006 tournament, but lost out to Germany.

The World Cup will be hosted in South Africa in 2010, but is expected to be hosted in South America in 2014, before a possible return to Europe in 2018.
