Marine video provokes widespread criticism
A secretly filmed video, appearing to show violent initiation rituals within the Royal Marines, has provoked widespread criticism.
The ‘News of the World’ published stills from the video, which showed a naked fistfight between two Marines, in Sunday’s edition of the paper.
The clips came from a film made in May this year at the base of the 42 Commando Royal Marines in Bickleigh, near Plymouth. It shows two naked Marines apparently being forced to fight each other. One Marine appeared to be kicked in the face and left unconscious.
The video is now the subject of an investigation by the Special Investigations Branch.
Conservative Shadow Defence Secretary Michael Ancram called the video “inexcusable”, while John Burnett, a former MP who served with 42 Commando, said that the activities in the video had “no place” in the Royal Marines.
Lord Timothy Garden, Liberal Democrat defence spokesperson in the House of Lords, called for an independent complaints system to allow recruits to report allegations of bullying.
However, Armed Forces Minister Adam Ingram, insisted that the alleged activities in the video were “not typical of what goes on”. He said: “We have a zero tolerance to any such activity within the armed forces overall.”

The Royal Marine killed in Afghanistan on Tuesday has been named as Benjamin Reddy. Marine Reddy, 22, from K Company, 42 Commando Royal Marines, was killed when his unit came under fire during a deliberate clearance operation in the Kajaki area of Helmand Province.

The Ministry of Defence has named the Royal Marine killed in Afghanistan on Sunday as Lance Corporal Michael Jones. LCpl Jones was killed in a gun battle with Taliban insurgents in the Nimruz province in the southwest of the country.

British serviceman killed in Afghanistan
A British serviceman has been killed in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed. The MoD said that the soldier died in the Helmand Province in Afghanistan on Monday morning. It is believed that the soldier was taking part in an attack on an insurgent base in the southern province.

Royal Marine Trainee Dies During 30-Mile March
A Royal Marine trainee has died following an exercise in Dartmoor. The man, who has not been named, collapsed during a 30-mile march at the weekend. He is understood to have been based at the Commando Training Centre at Lympstone, Devon. The cause of his death is unknown.
