Ahern views 2006 as 'make or break' year
The Irish Prime Minister has said that next year will be a "make or break" year for the Northern Ireland political process.
Speaking today after a Downing Street meeting with the British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Bertie Ahern said they had discussed how to move forward in the New Year and "get momentum" after the Christmas break.
The two leaders agreed that some form of impetus would have to be found to advance the political process.
Referring to the "Stormontgate" case, which had collapsed yesterday with no charges being brought due to lack of evidence, Mr Ahern said that this had caused "grief" to both him and Mr Blair.
He said that what was at the time described as "irrefutable evidence" had effectively "vanished".
The allegations over IRA information gathering collapsed the power-sharing Assembly in October 2002.
On Thursday lack of evidence in the case meant that charges made against three men alleged to have been involved in a "spy-ring" were dropped.
At the time police claimed that the raids were in relation to investigations into alleged terrorist activity.
However, yesterday a PSNI spokesperson said that "the entitlement of those three individuals to the presumption of innocence remains intact."
