Five killed in Australian plane crash

Two British tourists and an Irishman are among five people killed in a plane crash in Australia.

The plane, a Cessna 206, crashed near the town of Ipswich in Queensland, shortly after take-off, on Monday.

Operated by the Brisbane Skydiving Centre the plane had seven people on board – three trainee skydivers, three instructors and the pilot. The two Britons, a man and a woman, have not yet been named. Two Australians are also believed to have been killed in the incident. The Irish national is reported to have been Nigel O'Gorman, 34, a skydiving instructor from Co. Kildare.

Two people, including the man who owned the skydiving club, survived the crash. The man was said to be suffering from serious injuries, while the other survivor – a woman – received minor injuries. Both were taken to a nearby hospital.

According to reports, eyewitnesses saw a plume of smoke coming from the back of the plane before it clipped a tree and crashed into a reservoir.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau will conduct an investigation into the crash.
