Three men held over toddler abduction

Police are questioning three men over allegations of the kidnap and rape of a three-year-old girl.

Wiltshire police arrested a 26-year-old man from South Wales early this morning, after he crashed his car on the M4 between Marlborough and Hungerford.

Two other men, aged 34 and 47 were later arrested in Wales.

A man allegedly abducted the girl from her home in the Rumney area of Cardiff, a few hours before the crash. She is now being treated in hospital for injuries, which the police described as “significant”.

Wiltshire Police said that they first spotted a grey Ford Escort travelling with no headlights from Blagrove, near junction 16 of the M4 shortly after 1am on Wednesday morning. Police pursued the car along the M4 until the driver lost control and crashed the car between Marlborough and Hungerford.

The toddler was found in the car and was taken to hospital via police helicopter. The man was arrested on suspicion of kidnap, driving with excess alcohol and other motoring offences and was handed over to South Wales Police.

Commenting on the case, Superintendent Josh Jones, Deputy Divisional Commander for Cardiff, said: “This is an extremely rare event, which makes it all the more shocking. Rumney is a close-knit community and we ask the residents to work closely with us in providing any information that they can. We will continue to provide a very visible police presence in the area.”

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the incident room on 02920 222111 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
