Anger as one survives US mine disaster
Relatives of US miners, who were trapped in a West Virginia coal mine, have expressed anger after it emerged all but one man had died.
Families of 12 of the miners had been celebrating at the local Baptist church in the town of Sago, after they were told at midnight (05:00 GMT) that 12 of the 13 miners, trapped following an underground explosion, had survived. However, joy turned to anger and grief just three hours later when it emerged that only one of the miners had survived.
Ben Hatfield, president of the International Coal Group, said that a “mis-communication” had occurred when mobile phone conversations between the rescue team and command centre had been overheard.
He confirmed that only one man, 27-year-old Randall McCloy, had survived and had been taken to hospital, where he is in a critical condition.
The explosion took place around 06:30am local time on Monday morning at the Sago mine, trapping 13 miners. On Tuesday, the body of one of the miners was found, while the other 12 remained missing.
It is believed that the 12 men survived the explosion, but were overcome by deadly carbon monoxide fumes. They were discovered behind a barricade they had constructed in an attempt to block the toxic fumes.
The cause of the explosion is still unknown and an investigation by federal and state mine regulators will take place.

Body Found Following Explosion in Co Durham
A body of a man has been recovered from a house in Darlington, Co Durham, following an explosion. It is understood that fire crews were called after a suspected explosion caused a fire at a property on Lewes Road at about 02:50 on Friday morning. The body was found by firefighters after they entered the building.

Iraq bombs leave more than 150 dead
More than 150 people have been killed in a series of bomb blasts in Iraq. In the deadliest attack, at least 115 people were killed when a car bomb exploded in a market in Sadriyah. An hour before that blast, at least 30 people were killed in what is believed to have been an attack by a suicide bomber in a car at a police checkpoint in Sadr City.

Suspected bomber remanded in custody
Suspect bomber Hussain Osman has been remanded in custody following a court appearance on Friday morning. Amid tight security Mr Osman, 27, appeared before Bow Street Magistrates court sitting at Belmarsh prison. He was charged with seven offences including the attempted murder of passengers on a Tube train at Shepherd's Bush on July 21.

Two-Year-Old Survives 70ft Fall
A two-year-old toddler is recovering in hospital after falling from the seventh floor of a block of flats. The incident happened on Saturday evening at Arthur Court in Battersea, south-west London. It is believed the toddler fell at least 70 feet from a window but scaffolding 30 feet from the ground broke her fall.
