Details of cars released in abduction case

Police investigating the abduction of a six-year-old girl from her bath, have released details of three cars they are trying to trace.

The three vehicles were all seen around the Willington Quay area of North Tyneside when the girl was abducted on December 27.

The cars are a red or burgundy VW - possibly a VW Golf with an M or N registration - which was seen driving slowly around the Willington Quay area, including the back lanes, a few hours before the abduction.

Another red car, believed to be an old style BMW 3 series, is also being sought. It was seen being driven at speed from Bewicke Road, before travelling west along Hadrian road around 7:15pm.

The last car is a black Ford Focus, which was seen around Station Road and Bewicke Road around 6:30pm. Police said that the car was being driven at speed and was making an "excessive noise", as if it had some kind of mechanical defect.

The six-year-old girl was abducted from the bath in her Willington Quay home around 7pm on December 27. She was found a short time later, standing naked in an alleyway. She had been sexually assaulted.

DCI Jim Napier, who is leading the investigation, said: " We're asking for the drivers of these vehicles to come forward so that we can eliminate them from our enquiries.

"People might be there for a legitimate reason or in circumstances for which they might find it difficult to talk to us about. I want to stress that my main concern is the abduction and if the drivers of these vehicles come forward, anything they tell me will be in the strictest of confidence.

"We’d also like to hear from anyone who thinks they may recognise these vehicles and knows who owns them."

The announcement follows the news that the death of a man found in a flat near the girl's home is not being linked to the abduction. The body of Lee Bayley, 30, was found hanging in his flat last week.

Northumbria Police said that there was "no evidence" to suggest that Mr Bayley was linked to the case and said that his death was not being treated as suspicious.

Anyone with any information regarding the case is asked to contact police on: 0191 214 6555 - ext: 63806 or Crimestoppers on: 0800 555 111.
