British diplomats accused of spying in Russia
The Russian security service, FSB, has accused four British diplomats of spying activities in Moscow.
The accusations were made in a television documentary, broadcast on state-run Rossiya television. The programme included footage, in which it was alleged that four British officials and a Russian citizen were seen retrieving information from a transmitter located in an imitation rock in a street in the capital and downloading it on to palm-top computers.
The footage, taken by a hidden camera, shows individuals walking up to the rock and one man is seen carrying it away.
The Russian citizen was later arrested, the programme claimed.
The programme, which featured interviews with a number of FSB officials, also alleged that a British embassy official had made regular payments to Russian non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
The revelations come shortly after Russian president Vladimir Putin signed a law granting authorities greater powers to monitor NGOs.
The Foreign Office released a statement, saying that it was "surprised" by the allegations. The statement said: "We reject any allegation of improper conduct in our dealings with Russian NGOs. It is well known that the UK government has financially supported projects implemented by Russian NGOs in the field of human rights and civil society. All our assistance is given openly and aims to support the development of a healthy civil society in Russia."

The widow of former Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko has commended Prime Minister Gordon Brown for "standing firm" on his demand for the extradition of the main suspect in the assassination of the defector. Marina Litvinenko welcomed Mr Brown's continued "firm" calls for the extradition of Andrei Lugovoi, two years after Mr Litvinenko's poisoning.

The Russian defence minister has paid tribute to the British Navy team, which helped to rescue seven Russian sailors trapped in a mini submarine. Sergei Ivanov contacted British defence secretary John Reid to pay tribute to the British crew. In a telephone conversation, Mr Ivanov said: "I send my deepest thanks and appreciation.

Mr Yeltsin was known to have a history of heart trouble. Mr Yeltsin is known for helping lead Russia into democracy and a market economy.

A former Russian acting Prime Minister Yegor Gaidar is being treated in hospital following what may be some form of poisoning. Mr Gaidar, who was premiere for a time under the Boris Yeltsin regime, fell ill during a visit to Dublin last week and was treated at a Dublin hospital before being moved to Russia.
