Thai men to appeal death sentence
Two Thai fishermen sentenced to death for the rape and murder of British student Katherine Horton are appealing against their sentence.
Bualoi Posit, 23 and Wichai Somkhaoyai, 24, were sentenced to death by lethal injection last week at a court in Thailand.
However, the pair's lawyer, Phrompachara Namuang, said that the death penalty was "too harsh". He said that although they had been convicted on DNA evidence, there were no witnesses to the crime.
Both men admitted raping and killing Miss Horton, whose body was found in the sea off the island of Koh Samui on January 2.
The 21-year-old student from Cardiff had been on holiday with a friend when she was attacked. She had last been seen on the evening of New Year's Day, walking on the beach talking to her mother on her mobile phone.
Thailand's Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra had called for the "harshest punishment possible", saying that the murder had hurt the country's image and could damage its tourism industry.
However, although the maximum sentence for murder in Thailand is death, the sentence is usually reduced to prison sentences if the defendants plead guilty.

Mirza Tahir Hussain, 36, from Leeds, West Yorkshire, was convicted of the murder of taxi driver Jamshed Khan in 1989. He had always denied murdering the taxi driver, claiming that he acted in self-defence.
