'Museum quality' art stolen from millionaire's home

Millions of pounds worth of rare art of "museum quality" has been stolen from the home of a wealthy property tycoon.

Thieves broke into Ramsbury Manor on Wednesday night and stole hundreds of items, including silver, porcelain, clocks and some paintings.

Police said that the items, collected over 50 years by Mr Harry Hyams, were of "great rarity" and were of "museum quality". Among the pieces that were stolen was an exceptionally rare early Thomas Tompion clock, dating from the 17th century.

Wiltshire Police said that the burglary would be compared to other high value burglaries in the country to see if there were links to any other investigations. However, so far, it has not been directly linked to any other offences.

A spokesperson for Mr Hyams said: "We can confirm that there has been a substantial burglary at Ramsbury Manor - the thieves were disturbed and the police responded immediately and most efficiently.

"Happily nobody was injured and the police are actively following up leads, which they hope will lead to a successful outcome. Everything that has been taken is readily identifiable, is of museum quality, and will be extremely difficult to dispose of.

"The building was occupied, but Mr Hyams was not present at the time."

Anyone with any information regarding the burglary is asked to contact Wiltshire Police on: 0845 408 7000 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on: 0800 555 111.
