Brits recognise emerging talent

New talent dominated last night’s 2006 Brit Awards with the Kaiser Chiefs, James Blunt and KT Tunstall, all almost unknown 12 months ago, taking centre stage.

Leeds band Kaiser Chiefs received three gongs, including the prestigious Best British Group and Best Rock Act. The band also collected the award for Best Live Act.

Former army captain James Blunt won two awards, Best Pop Act and Best British Male, while Scottish singer/songwriter KT Tunstall was named Best British Female.

There were honours for more established acts as well however, with Coldplay winning Best British Album and Best British Single, and US giants Green Day awarded Best International Group and Best International Album.

Band of the moment Artic Monkeys won Best Breakthrough Act, while Madonna was named Best International Female.

Veteran of British music Paul Weller was given the Outstanding Contribution To Music award.

The ceremony was hosted by TV presenter Chris Evans.
