Police find £11 million in Kent robbery investigation

Police investigating the £53 million Securitas depot robbery in Kent have recovered up to £11 million, it has been revealed.

Kent police said that a total of 17 people had now been arrested in connection with the robbery. A 28-year-old man was arrested in the Bexley area on Saturday and was released on police bail on Sunday.

A 43-year-old man who was arrested on Thursday in southeast London during a raid at an industrial estate in Welling has also been released on police bail.

Five people - four men and a woman appeared in court last week on charges relating to the robbery. John Fowler, a 57-year-old car dealer from Elderden Farm, Staplehurst, was charged with conspiracy to rob, handling stolen goods and kidnapping depot manager Colin Dixon, his wife Lynn and the couple's son Craig.

Stuart Royle, a fellow car salesman, 47, of no fixed abode, was also charged with conspiracy to rob, while Kim Shackleton, 39, a hairdresser from Maidstone was charged with handling stolen goods.

Jetmar Bucpapa, 24, of Hadlow Road, Tonbridge and Lea John Rushe, 33, from Southborough, near Tunbridge Wells, also appeared in court charged with conspiracy to rob.

All of the accused are due to reappear in court on March 13.

Kent Police said that searches were continuing at a number of addresses in Kent and across the south east as the investigation team followed up further leads.

Chief Constable Michael Fuller also announced that the Police Service of Northern Ireland had been invited to review progress to date in the robbery investigation. He said: "This is recognised good practice in the police service and we value the opportunity to learn from our colleagues, who bring their considerable experience from the Northern Bank robbery.

"This review allows experienced investigators, independent of our inquiry, to look at what we have done and what we plan to do and to help us take stock."

The PSNI team, led by Chief Constable Sir Hugh Orde, are expected to arrive early this week.

Police also confirmed that Mr Dixon and his family are "recovering well" from their ordeal during the robbery.

The Securitas depot in Tonbridge was robbed on February 22 after an armed gang kidnapped Mr Dixon and his family. The £53 million robbery was the largest cash robbery ever in Britain.
