HSE to prosecute BNG Sellafield over leak
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is to bring a criminal prosecution against British Nuclear Group Sellafield Ltd (BNGSL) in connection with a leak at the Sellafield reprocessing site.
The decision to prosecute follows a detailed investigation by HSE’s Nuclear Installations Inspectorate into a leak of radioactive liquid inside a heavily shielded facility at the Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant (THORP).
Notified of the incident on 20 April 2005, HSE has applied to the courts for summonses alleging that BNGSL breached three conditions attached to the Sellafield site licence granted under the Nuclear Installations Act 1965.
These conditions require the licensee: to make, and comply with, written instructions; to ensure safety systems are in good working order; and to ensure radioactive material is contained and, if leaks occur, they are detected and reported.
An initial hearing is scheduled for June 8, 2006 at Whitehaven Magistrates Court, Cumbria.
The plant has been shut since April 2005 and the 83 cubic metres of acidic radioactive liquid which leaked into a stainless steel-lined cell with 1.5m thick concrete walls has been recovered to holding tanks.
HSE said that there was no current evidence of any harm to workers or the public.
THORP reprocesses nuclear fuel from overseas and UK second-generation commercial reactors.

Alarm Triggered At Sellafield Nuclear Plant
A safety check is underway at the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant following an alarm indicating "elevated levels of radioactivity" was triggered. A spokesman for the plant in Cumbria said that the site was partially closed and buildings were being checked. He added that there was currently no evidence of radioactive release or accident.

Sellafield plans to 'significantly reduce' radioactive discharges

Nuclear Waste To Be Shipped To Japan
Final preparations are being made to return waste from the Sellafield site in the UK to overseas customers, which will leave later today. A single 113te flask, containing 28 stainless steel containers of solid Highly Active Waste (HAW), is being transported from the Sellafield site, on a specially constructed rail wagon, to the port of Barrow.

Preferred Bidder Announced For Sellafield Contract
The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority has announced Nuclear Management Partners Ltd is the preferred bidder for the contract to run Sellafield. The consortium consists of three firms from the US, UK and France. They are Washington International Holdings Ltd., AMEC and AREVA NC.

Inquiry launched into Sellafield organ removal
An inquiry has been launched into claims that body parts and tissue was removed from the bodies of nuclear workers at Sellafield without their families knowledge. It has been alleged that the workers, who had been employed at the Cumbria plant in the 1960s and 1970s had tissues, bones and body parts removed.
