Rooney to miss World Cup group matches

England striker Wayne Rooney will miss the group stages of England's World Cup matches, but may be fit to play in the World Cup quarter finals.

The announcement followed a scan on Rooney's injured foot. The 20-year-old Manchester United striker broke a metatarsal bone in his foot during a Premiership match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on April 29.

Rooney will fly out to Germany with the rest of the England squad on June 5, but will have to return to Manchester on June 14 for a further scan which will determine when he can resume full training.

England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson said that the news was "encouraging". He said: "I'm looking forward to Wayne joining up with the rest of the squad on Sunday. That fact that he is flying out to Germany with us will give everyone a huge lift.

"We're hoping that the second scan will show further improvement and that Wayne can play his part in the World Cup."

England's first group stage is against Paraguay in Frankfurt on June 10, followed by matches against Trinidad & Tobago in Nuremberg on June 15 and Sweden in Cologne on June 20.

If they are successful and top the group, their next match will be in Stuttgart on June 25, and if they come second, the next match will be in Munich on June 24.
