Man jailed for Hassan kidnap

An Iraqi man has been jailed for his role in the kidnap of British aid worker Margaret Hassan, who was murdered in Iraq in 2004.

At a court in Baghdad on Monday, Mustafa al-Jobouri was found guilty of aiding and abetting the kidnap of Mrs Hassan, who was abducted in October 2004.

Two other men standing trial for the care worker's murder were released - one man was cleared, while the other was freed because of a lack of evidence.

Mrs Hassan was shot dead a month after she was abducted. Her body has never been found.

The 59-year-old, who had British, Iraqi and Irish nationality had lived in Iraq for 30 years and was director of the Care International group.

Mrs Hassan's family have suggested that the British government's refusal to speak to the kidnappers may have cost her her life.

The family claimed that the kidnappers made four calls from Mrs Hassan's mobile phone to her Iraqi husband asking to speak to the British embassy. However, the British embassy would not talk to the kidnappers.

The Foreign Office confirmed that Mrs Hassan's husband was called from her phone but said that they could not confirm whether or not the callers were actually her captors.
