Five-day strike for Asda workers

Thousands of Asda workers are set to hold a five-day strike from June 30 in a pay dispute.

The strike will involve staff who work as HGV drivers and warehouse pickers and loaders at Asda distribution depots in Bedford, Chepstow, Dartford, Didcot, Erith, Falkirk, Grangemouth, Ince George in Wigan, Lymedale Staffordshire, Lutterworth in Leicestershire, Portbury in Bristol, Skelmersdale, Teesport, ADC Wigan, Wakefield and Washington.

The strike action is being held over a dispute with Asda - which is owned by US supermarket Wal-Mart - over pay and bargaining rights.

The GMB union members want proper national bargaining structures between Asda and the union to be established, covering pay, conditions and union facilities.

There is also a dispute over profit-related bonus pay.

Phil Davies, GMB National Secretary, said: "There appears to be a clear clash of cultures between the way workers do business in Britain and the way Wal-Mart does business. It is significant that the strike dates set by the shop stewards covers Independence Day. GMB members in Asda Wal-Mart want independence from the anti-trade union tactics of Wal-Mart worldwide."

Asda said that it had been working on contingency plans in order to minimise disruption to customers in their stores.

The GMB has warned that it will take legal action against any employment agencies which supply temporary staff to Asda during the strike.
