Strike ballot for postal workers

Up to 136,000 postal workers are to be balloted over possible strike action, following the collapse of pay negotiations.

The Communication Workers Union said that notice will be issued to Royal Mail on July 3. Ballot papers would then be despatched to union members from July 10, with the ballot closing on July 31.

The dispute centres on Royal Mail's imposition of a 2.9% pay rise, as well as the company's future plans, including plans to axe 40,000 jobs and planned changes to ways of working.

Dave Ward, Deputy General Secretary, said: "Royal Mail should be under no illusion that the CWU is prepared to take decisive action to defend the pay and future job security of our members.

"We have allowed 4 weeks so far to reach agreement since our annual conference decision and now we are giving a further week. I would suggest that Royal Mail seize this opportunity and work hard to reach an acceptable agreement or a strike ballot will take place."

A spokesperson for Royal Mail said that the firm was "very willing to talk with the union".
