British soldier killed in Afghanistan

A British soldier has been killed in Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.

The soldier, who served with 3 Para Battle Group, was on patrol in the town of Sangin in the southern province of Helmand, when the patrol came under attack from suspected Taliban forces.

The Ministry of Defence issued a statement which said: "It is with deep regret that we can confirm that during the incident a British soldier has been killed. We are currently in the process of informing the next of kin and cannot comment further until this process is complete."

The latest death brings the total of UK servicemen to be killed in Afghanistan within the last four weeks to six. Two soldiers were killed in a rocket grenade attack at the weekend in the Helmand province.

Thirty-five Taliban fighters have also been killed after US troops launched an attack on a Taliban compound in southern Afghanistan.
