Briton held following ex-lover's murder

A British man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his former girlfriend in Florida before fleeing to Britain.

Darren Bridgeman, 34, from Malvern in Worcestershire, was wanted by US police for the murder of 33-year-old Tracey Bennawit and the attempted murder of her partner Adam Strickman.

According to reports from the US, Miss Bennawit was shot dead outside her home in Oviedo, Seminole County, Florida on June 24. Mr Strickman was shot in the chest and was seriously wounded.

Miss Bennawit's 14-year-old son Caelin managed to escape from the scene uninjured.

Bridgeman, who is understood to have gone to the US as a student in 1993, is reported to have had an 18-month relationship with Miss Bennawit and they ran a video business together before they split up earlier this year.

Mr Bridgeman voluntarily handed himself into police in Worcester on Thursday and was due to appear at Bow Street Magistrates Court on Friday.
