Diver dies in incident at Stoney Cove

A man has died in an incident at the National Diving Centre in Stoney Cove.

Police were called to the centre around 9:40 am on Sunday morning after receiving reports that a diver had got into difficulty underwater.

An RAF rescue team were also called to the centre.

The man, who has not been named, was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary, but he was later pronounced dead.

Four other divers suffered decompression sickness - known as 'the bends' - as they helped the man to the surface.

They have all been taken to a hospital in Merseyside to receive treatment in a recompression chamber. Their injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.

The divers are all understood to be qualified and were participating in a programme to improve deep diving skills organised by a Derbyshire diving school.

A spokesperson for the centre said: "The Stoney Cove rescue team responded instantly and almost immediately other divers in the group brought the distressed diver to the surface."

The spokesperson said that the four divers who brought the man to the surface had ascended faster than normal and were being treated in a recompression chamber as a result.

Leicestershire Police said that they were not treating the man's death as suspicious and would prepare a file for the coroner.
