British evacuees flee from Lebanon

The first British evacuees from Lebanon have arrived in Cyprus.

HMS Gloucester pulled into Beirut's port yesterday, and the first person the get off was a man in his 40's, holding a small boy.

Many people were clutching their personal belongings, with one teenager carrying his guitar.

5,000 Britons are expected to follow over the next week, with at least 800 evacuees to leave on Wednesday.

The ship's captain, Commander Mike Patterson, described the evacuation as "very successful".

He said: "We are absolutely delighted to be here and to be the first Royal Navy warship into Beirut. The morale among the ship's crew is very good and they are itching to help out."

Mr Patterson has also said the HMS Gloucester and HMS York will sail back and forth between Beirut and Cyprus for as long as they were needed.

The Foreign Office has announced that any Britons who would like to leave Lebanon should be sure they are registered with the Embassy on 00 961 1990 400 or through the Foreign Office on 0044 207 008 1500.
