Mobiles and MP3 players blamed for rise in street crime
A rise in the number of people carrying mobile phones and MP3 players is being blamed for a rise in street crimes according to the latest home office figures.
The figures showed muggings and robberies in England and Wales shot up by 8 per cent.
According to police figures 98,204 robberies happened in 2005/6 compared with 90,747 the previous year.
Home Secretary John Reid said he shared the concerns of many people that the numbers of violent offences recorded by the police have increased, particularly robbery.
"This is largely driven by a rise in the number of young people carrying expensive goods, such as mobile phones and MP3 players. Whilst that is a reason, it is not an excuse. I am determined to reverse the rise in recorded robbery and am already taking action to address it."
The Home Office is working with 27 areas with particularly high robbery problems, and giving targeted expert advice to reduce the levels of street crime.

The overall crime rate in England and Wales is continuing to fall, according to the results of the British Crime Survey (BCS). The survey showed that the overall crime rate fell by 11%, in the year ending September 2004.

Official figures show big rise in employment rate
Employment levels are up, and the number of people claiming out-of-work benefits is down, according to official figures out today. The number of people in work in the UK was 28.3 million in the three months to July 2004, up 179,000 in a year. Official unemployment figures show a fall of 87,000 to 1.41 million over the same period.

Report reveals increase in violent crime
The Home Office has today released a report revealing that violent crime particularly gun crime and robbery are all on the increase in the UK. The report states that violent crime is on the increase, despite a fall in the total amount of criminal behaviour recorded.

Street crime still on the rise
Official statistics have revealed that street crime and robbery in England and Wales rose by 5% between April and June this year. The increase follows an 8% rise recorded in the year to April – an upward trend which has been attributed to a higher level of thefts from people carrying electronic items such as MP3 players and mobile phones.
