British girl dies in fire show tragedy

A six-year-old British girl has died after suffering burns when a fire-breathing show at a Turkish hotel went wrong.

Eden Galvani, who is believed to be from Ilford, east London, was watching the show with her mother at the Gemini Resort in Didim on Saturday.

According to reports, the accident happened when fire-eater Tahir Akalin was unable to light a baton during his act. When the baton was finally ignited, reportedly with alcohol, the flames are understood to have connected with the bottle, causing it to explode.

Eden was the most seriously injured and was taken to a local hospital, before being transferred to a burns unit at Kusadasi. She was then taken to a teaching hospital in Izmir where she died on Monday.

Eight people were injured apart from Eden, including six Britons, three of them children. None are believed to be seriously injured.

A spokesperson for the Foreign Office said that consular staff were providing assistance.

It has been reported that Mr Akalin was among the injured and that he would be arrested after being treated in the hospital.
