Bomb threat note forces plane to divert

A British passenger plane operated by Excel Airways en route from Gatwick to Egypt diverted to a southern Italian airport after the pilot reported that a bomb was suspected to be on board.

Salvatore De Paolis, a spokesman for border police at the airport commented: "Authorities searching the plane found a handwritten note in English that said there was a bomb on the plane."

The aircraft, a Boeing 747 with 280 people on board and bound for Hurghada in Egypt was forced to make an emergency landing in Brindisi. The aircraft accompanied by an F16 fighter jet landed safely and passengers disembarked, news reports indicated that the passengers including several young children were 'shaken up' by their ordeal.

Passengers were told in an announcement that a note had been discovered indicating that there could be a bomb aboard.

Brindisi border police chief Salvatore de Paolis said: "The alarm has been called off because it was just a matter of this note, but checks are still under way."

Excel Airways is a UK charter passenger airline and provides mainly short-haul services to European and Middle Eastern leisure destinations.
