Eleven in court over alleged bomb plot

Eleven people have appeared in court charged in connection with an alleged plot to blow up passenger jets.

The suspects appeared at the City of Westminster Magistrates' Court in London on Tuesday to face a number of charges under the Terrorism Act 2006.

Eight of the suspects were charged with conspiracy to murder and a new offence of preparing acts of terrorism. They were all remanded in custody to reappear in court on September 4.

Another three suspects, a 17-year-old and the 23-year-old mother of an eight-month-old baby, were also remanded in custody, charged with other offences under the Terrorism Act. The 17-year-old was accused of possessing items of use to people preparing terrorism acts.

While the other two suspects were charged with failing to disclose information. All three are due to reappear in court on August 29.

Eleven other people remain in police custody, while one woman arrested as part of the investigation has been released without charge.

Police have until Wednesday to continue questioning the remaining eleven suspects.

The charges relate to an alleged plot to blow up planes travelling from the UK to the US, using liquid-based explosives. The alleged plot was revealed on August 10, resulting in the widespread cancellation of flights in the UK and travel disruption for thousands of passengers in the UK.

On Monday, Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Peter Clarke, said that bomb-making equipment, including chemicals and electrical components, had been discovered in the course of the investigation. He also confirmed that a number of video recordings, believed to be 'martyrdom' videos, had also been found.

Police continue to question terror suspects
Police are continuing to question four terror suspects arrested in London as part of an investigation into alleged international terrorism.
